Since its inception in 2009, the Heffner Internship Endowment in the School of Business Administration has helped more than 140 business students at the University of Dayton successfully complete summer internships at over 90 different companies and organizations. Students may apply for scholarships of up to $4000 to help pay for qualified expenses for summer jobs – jobs that become significant additions to resumes that future employers use to make hiring decisions.
The scholarships, made possible through the generosity and foresight of Bill Heffner, encourage business students who want to secure an internship related to their business program. Relocating for a summer job, far from home and campus, can be difficult, and the Heffner awards help students accept even non-paying internships.
Companies hiring Heffner Internship recipients include the National Basketball Association, Blackrock Inc., Google, and Ernst & Young, to name just a few. Rachel Massie, an accounting major, plans to graduate in May 2022. “With the help and generosity of Mr. Heffner,” she says, “I was able to network with professionals, have one-on-one experiences with clients, and learn what a career in accounting can look like.”
Marieme Ndoye (pictured) couldn’t agree more. “My internship with LivCor in Chicago offered new insights into my major and I’m now more confident of my plans. I’m so grateful for the endowment, and someday I expect to follow Mr. Heffner’s example and give back in the same way.” Marieme, majoring in marketing with a psychology minor, will graduate in May 2023, and typical of UD students, she envisions living out the Flyer theme of Learn, Lead, Serve.
The process for interested students is simple and straightforward: fill out an application form, write a brief essay describing how the internship would enhance your college experience and how the award could impact your ability to participate, and submit an estimate of expenses. Applications are reviewed by the SBA Undergraduate Curriculum and Assurance of Learning Committee with input from the Dean. Students are notified of decisions around the end of April.
Business students should watch for Heffner Internship Endowment announcements in late January or early February.
