Alumni and Friends Making an Impact

Inspired by her sociology classes at UD, Katie Norman-Miwa ’16 has made community-based work the true North of her career.

There’s a cross in every classroom at the University of Dayton — constant reminders of UD’s Catholic, Marianist mission, but it’s the faculty, staff and students who bring that mission to life and create the vibrant, intellectually curious and welcoming community. 

Mona Guerrier Fallen ’91 was a first-generation college student at UD whose remarkable journey led her to become an Assistant United States Attorney in Dayton, serving for over 13 years. After Mona passed away in 2013, her husband, Destry Fallen, established the Mona Guerrier Fallen Endowed Scholarship for the Multi-Ethnic Education and Engagement Center to honor her commitment to educational opportunities for all and her optimistic and enthusiastic approach to life.

A pandemic-induced lull in investing grounded UD’s Flyer Angels. That was until Isabella Abreu and Missy Oei stepped in as managing directors last year. Now the pair are reinvesting in the group, helping it take off.

Years ago, a coach gave sophomore men’s soccer player Basit Umar this advice: "One leg is good; two legs are better." His coach used the words to explain the importance of playing a sport and getting an education.
