Summer Study Abroad Partnership

Take Your Law School Experience A Little Further

Thanks to a partnership with the St. Mary's University School of Law, students at Dayton Law have the opportunity to take part in our Summer Study Abroad Program in Innsbruck, Austria.

Innsbruck, Austria Summer Study Abroad

AustriaAt the Institute on World Legal Problems in Innsbruck, Austria, students will be able to take part in one of the longest continuously operated summer law study programs offered by any American law school.

Visits are made to the local government offices and to the state seat of government, and guest lectures typically are presented by European professors. Scholars traveling in Europe and lawyers abroad on international business often are invited to share insights with the classes or deliver special lectures on important international topics. Students have the opportunity to converse with foreign scholars and Austrian lawyers on several occasions. Austrian students will participate in classes, off-campus visits, and social events, along with their American colleagues.

Classes meet Monday through midday Thursday. This schedule allows students time to travel on weekends to such destinations as Rome, Paris, the French Riviera, Venice, Vienna, Zurich, Munich, Prague, and Budapest.

Note: First-year students who wish to participate in the Summer Study Abroad program between their first and second years must have a GPA of at least 2.7 by the end of the Fall semester preceding the program. Second-year students who wish to participate in the Summer Study Abroad program between their second and third years must have a GPA of at least 2.7 by the end of the Fall semester preceding the program.

Need Financial Aid?

Please complete the steps below in order to apply for federal financial aid for the Summer Study Abroad Program.

  1. Complete the latest FAFSA if you have not already done so.
  2. Meet with the Admissions and Financial Aid office to begin a consortium agreement. Allow plenty of lead time. View the consortium agreement.
  3. Get pre-approval and a Dean’s letter from the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
  4. Complete Section I of the Contractual Agreement.
  5. Contact Student Accounts to confirm your UD account is current. If you have a balance due to UD, your aid will be held and not available to send to your host school for payment.

Students must be registered for at least half-time summer, as determined by the host school, in order to get Federal student loans. If you are also taking classes through UDSL, we can create a blended budget. Once your budget is determined, if you have not already used your yearly maximum of Direct unsubsidized loan, you will be offered this for summer. Otherwise, you will be offered summer Grad PLUS loan eligibility. You would need to then apply and be credit-approved for this loan before we could complete the consortium agreement.

Please note that funds cannot be released by the Office of Student Accounts before the start of the summer abroad program, so funds for airfare, etc. would need to be paid initially out of pocket, then reimbursed.
