Sukh Sidhu named Research Institute executive director

John Leland, vice president for research, announced today that Sukh Sidhu has been named executive director of the University of Dayton Research Institute effective immediately.  Sidhu, who currently serves as UDRI's director of research and development and is a distinguished researcher and faculty member, is especially known for leading multidisciplinary collaborations.

"Sukh's keen ability to connect with our customers, understand their needs and visions and, more so, help them achieve their goals is a highly sought but rare hallmark of success in our industry," Leland said. "It is also one of several reasons he was promoted to director of business development in 2016, and again in 2019 to director of research and development, where he has been responsible for leading and growing sponsored programs in addition to developing new business."

Leland said Sidhu has done an outstanding job of pulling together multi-divisional teams whose experts in various technologies have allowed the Research Institute to pursue significantly larger and more complex programs and in new areas of business.

"I'm confident we'll see an increasing number of collaborative programs and new technology growth under his direction," Leland added.

Sidhu joined UDRI more than 28 years ago as a postdoctoral researcher in the former Energy and Environmental Engineering Division, focused on pollution reduction technologies, then expanded his research to include green energy technologies after his promotion to distinguished research scientist. Early on Sidhu demonstrated a knack for developing mutually beneficial partnerships with other talented researchers to pursue and successfully execute increasingly larger programs, which led to progressively greater responsibilities. He was promoted to group leader for sustainable environmental technologies, and later to division head for sustainment technologies transition. Throughout his research career, Sidhu simultaneously taught undergraduate and graduate courses in these same areas in UD's School of Engineering and College of Arts and Sciences.

Sidhu is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Chemical Society, the Combustion Institute and the Sigma Xi Research Society. He holds a doctoral degree in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois, Chicago.
