Medical Services

Scope of Care

Confidential medical services provided by board certified physicians and registered nurses include:

• Primary medical care for illnesses and injuries
• Physicals (routine, work, sports)
• Well-woman exams (including Pap smears, pelvic exams and breast exams)
• Immunizations (including Gardasil, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Influenza, MMR, Tetanus)
• TB testing (PPD) or blood work
• Travel visits (Malaria prevention, immunization counseling, etc. Call for a doctor's appointment at least one month prior to departure.)
• Allergy injections (Allergy Forms)
• STD screening and treatment
• HIV screening
• Free urine pregnancy testing
• X-rays
• Diagnostic tests
• Nebulizer treatments
• Smoking cessation program
• Treatment for depression 
• Follow-up care after Emergency Room visit

For depression, anxiety, eating disorders, stress-related concerns, visit Counseling Center 

For tobacco cessation, alcohol or drug abuse concerns, visit CADRE

The center also offers health care and education for:

• Acute care for non-emergency medical problems.
• Comprehensive longitudinal care for ongoing or complicated medical issues, e.g. concussions, asthma, hormonal problems, hepatic or hematologic complications of mono, latent tuberculosis infection.
• Nurse phone line for students' medical questions and assessment.
• Education of students in health care decision-making and self-care, appropriate to their developmental status.
• Assessment of alcohol, tobacco, and drug usage, with risk education, social norming, and recommendations for on- and off-campus resources.
• Wound management (e.g. pilonidal cyst care).
• Administration of injectable medications from outside physicians with approved orders; nurse education for self-administration of certain injectable medications.
• Crisis care and free testing and treatment for sexual assaults, referral to/from campus partners.
• No visit charge for undergraduates and certain graduate populations whose program pays a per-semester fee; charges are incurred for medications dispensed, labs done on-site, X-rays, EKGs, immunizations, and certain supplies and procedures.

Collaborative support across campus for:

• Managing mental health medication and evaluating symptoms related to mental health diagnosis, inlcuding co-management with the Counseling Center.
• Working with the Brooke Center and health and wellbeing partners to promote health initiatives.
• Extending support to under-resourced and minority students.
• Evaluating and coordinating temporary or long-term accommodations and work with the Office of Learning Resources to support students' academic needs and success.
• Coordinating with the Dean of Students' office for follow-up of medical transports to the emergency room, hospitalizations and academic support.
• Managing referrals for specialized tests or to specialist physicians, including pre-certifications, insurance authorizations, and scheduling.

Campus public health and communicable disease risk reduction:

• Managing the health requirements for new students, ensuring they comply with necessary regulations.
• Collaborating with Global and Intercultural Affairs staff to collect and complete health requirements for international students.
• Coordinating with Public Health-Dayton and Montgomery County to report and follow-up on any cases of infectious diseases such as mumps, chickenpox, and COVID-19.
• Working with Housing and Residence Life to address isolation and quarantine needs for students who may have contracted illnesses like mumps, chickenpox, hand-foot-mouth disease or COVID-19.
