THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Chapel of the Immaculate Conception closed weekdays in January

Through Friday, Feb. 2, all weekday Chapel of the Immaculate Conception liturgical celebrations, including 12:30 p.m. Mass, reconciliation, exposition and evening prayers are in the Marianist Hall chapel while the main chapel receives lighting system repairs. Scheduled times for all weekday celebrations remain unchanged. The Marianist Hall chapel also is available during the day for personal prayer. Please note: ONLY weekday celebrations are impacted and ALL normally scheduled Sunday Masses remain in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception during this time.

MLK week events for students Jan. 16-20

A pair of film screenings and discussions on "The Best of Enemies" and "At the River I Stand," a writing workshop on Dr. King’s "I Have a Dream" speech where students can compose poetry to perform at the "I Have a Dream" poetry slam, and the MLK Social Justice Plunge day of service where participants explore how civic and community engagement are essential to social justice advocacy are among events for students to learn about the legacy of the Rev. RSVP for the 2024 Marianist founders dinner

All are invited to an evening of dinner and conversation to celebrate the three Marianist founders 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, in the Kennedy Union ballroom. The year’s theme, “Bold Steps: Facing Change with Faith,” will focus on faithfully responding to changing circumstances. RSVP for the Marianist founders dinner here.

Total solar eclipse April 8 to pass over UD; some classes to be canceled for viewing

On Monday, April 8, North America will experience a total solar eclipse that passes over Ohio. The University will be in the path of totality, where the sun is eclipsed completely by the moon. The partial eclipse starts at 1:53 p.m. with totality at 3:09:29 p.m., lasting for 2 minutes 43 seconds, with the end of the eclipse at 4:25 p.m. Undergraduate and graduate/doctoral classes scheduled between 1:25-4:50 p.m. will not meet April 8, allowing all to view the eclipse. All classes scheduled to start before 1:25 p.m. or after 4:50 p.m. will meet as scheduled. More information on eclipse planning will be shared in the coming months.

Final call: Submit great writing for chance to win scholarships

Line By Line, A Journal of Beginning Student Writing, is accepting submissions for the spring issue. First- and second-year students taking an ENG 100, 114, 198, 200 or ASI 110/120 writing course are eligible. Find the submission link here; create an account to submit. The submission deadline is noon Friday, Jan. 12. Scholarship awards of $100 will be given for the best submission from each course, and two $500 awards will be presented to winners of The John D. and Rose Marie Grope Award for Excellence in Writing. Acceptable genres include expository writing, research papers, literary analysis, rhetorical analysis, literacy narratives, multi-genre projects and digital media podcasts. Final call: Graduate students can apply for Marian Library/IMRI fellowship

The Marian Library and the International Marian Research Institute are accepting applications for short-term fellowships to support research and artistic creation using collection and expertise from the organizations. Applications for the graduate student fellowship are accepted through Monday, Jan. 15. More information on the fellowship is available online.

The Emporium reopens with credit card entry

If you haven’t visited The Emporium, a new feature makes it easier to stop by for food, drinks and more. Credit card entry is available by simply scanning your credit card at the entry gate.

Interested in studying abroad this summer? The deadline to apply is Thursday, Feb. 1. Visit the Education Abroad and Away website or Alumni Hall 211, or email GIA@udayton.edu with questions.

Did you know UD offers crowdfunding support?

Students, faculty and staff can raise money for breakout trips, experiential learning opportunities, research students and more through UD's crowdfunding platform, Flyer Funder. So far, Flyer Funder has helped raise nearly $350,000 for more than 85 projects. Applications are due by Tuesday, Feb. 6. Learn more about Flyer Funder.

The University hearing board encourages students interested in upholding the integrity of the UD community to apply for the board, which handles student cases related to potential violations of policy. Complete this form to apply or email csc@udayton.edu for more information.
