Next Steps

Here's what you can expect next:

We began sending merit scholarship award letters in November. If you were recently admitted, you can expect to receive your scholarship award letter within one week of your acceptance letter.

By filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you can be considered for need-based financial aid, including grants (which don’t have to be repaid), federal loans and work-study options. We encourage you to file as soon as possible, if you haven't already.

You will receive an email when we receive your FAFSA. Be sure to watch your Admission Account for updates or requests for additional information.

Following your scholarship award letter, you will receive your transparent financial aid offer, which will provide a four-year overview of your total educational investment. We started sending financial aid offers in April and will continue in May. You'll receive an email when your offer is available in your Admission Account, and the printed offer will follow in the mail.

After You Confirm Enrollment

After you confirm enrollment, you'll receive access to your Porches account. Named after the beloved porches in our student neighborhood, Porches is the digital home for your personalized next steps and opportunities. Please watch for an email inviting you to activate your account so you can begin completing the following items.

Porches To-do List Items

Your UD email account is a Gmail account administered by the University. We recommend that you sign into this account on your phone to receive notifications of new messages. This is how campus partners, including your academic adviser, will start communicating with you over the summer.

New Student Orientation is required for all incoming students. In June or July, you'll spend a full day on campus connecting with the Flyer community, exploring campus resources and academic advising, meeting new students, and more. Orientation provides you the opportunity to learn more about the University, gain confidence in your transition and meet other current and future Flyers.

Unlike at some other schools, there is no charge for orientation, and lunch is provided. Parents and guardians are welcome to attend (up to two guests per student).

One of the most exciting parts of college life is living on campus with friends and classmates. UD guarantees housing for all students who confirm enrollment by May 15, and no additional housing deposit is required. First-year students live in residence halls, or you can request to commute from home if living with your parent or guardian within forty miles of campus (commuters must also complete the housing form, to confirm your plans).

In your housing contract, you’ll have the option to select your roommate or take advantage of our highly successful roommate matching program, which pairs students based on compatibility, not random assignment.

Upcoming housing assignments will be made according to the schedule below:
If you submit your housing contract by: You'll receive your assignment on:
May 20 May 28
July 8 July 16

After July 8, additional assignments will be made on a rolling basis.

To receive your housing assignment, the following items must be completed on your Porches To-do List:

Housing assignments are sent to your UD email address, and will include roommate contact information and links to photos and dimensions of your specific room.

Explore Residential Facilities

To protect the health of the campus community, all incoming students must complete the Health Requirement Form. You'll need to gather immunization records and complete a tuberculosis (TB) screening questionnaire with a medical professional, so don't snooze on this task. The deadline is June 7, 2024.

Course preference selection will be available between May 21 — June 14. Here are additional details to help with this task:

  • If your major requires the ALEKS math placement exam (applicable to most STEM and business majors), you should take this exam before completing course preferences. This ensures that you're offered math courses appropriate for your skill level. There's no need to study — the online test uses individualized question sets to assess your math competencies and will generally take between 60 and 90 minutes to complete. If the ALEKS math placement exam is required for your major, it will be available on your Porches To-do List.
  • We recommend completing course preferences as soon as possible to select from more courses and class time offerings and ensure an accurate first semester bill.
  • Don't worry — you can't mess this up! Your adviser or dean's office have carefully selected courses for you that are specific to your major or academic track. Certain courses are required, but you'll be able to choose which of those courses you'd like to take in your first semester and/or the course times that work best for your schedule.
  • Students in the FIRST program will not submit course preferences; your dean's office will create your first semester schedule.
  • It's important to complete course preference selection before attending New Student Orientation.
  • Please keep in mind that you are submitting preferences, and your schedule won't be final when you hit 'submit.' Your dean's office or academic adviser will continue to review your schedule throughout the summer and may make changes for a variety of reasons, including the receipt of test scores or transcripts for prior earned credit or adjustments to course offerings or availability.
  • Preliminary fall schedules will be released on Porches June 15.

If you have questions about course preferences or your preliminary schedule, your dean's office or academic adviser can help. Learn more at the links below:

If you have decided that you'd like to change your major, contact the Office of Recruitment and Admission to discuss your options.
